'Rise'
(Theatre/Dance Production)
The theme of homosexuality is never an easy subject to approach amidst an environment of fixed sexual, social and religious attitudes, prejudices and sexual taboos.'Rise' is a story dealing with young gay male's struggle toward self-realization and deals with the theme of homosexuality against the backdrop of bigotry and intolerance.
It is a song of liberation that emphasizes all of our humanities. A universal call to freedom. Ultimately, the flower unfolding and the bird taking flight. It is a story of transformation.
It was written in response to those who feel this bigotry in their daily lives both men and women for their given preference but also in homage to those who have paid the hefty price for it with their lives. In the summer of 2008 there was a series of brutal attacks and murders of several young gay males within our community...
